Pack a truck correctly

Helpful tips to packing a truck:

  1. Back the truck close to the largest door of your home and, if possible, park where the sidewalk is high so the loading ramp will be level as possible.
  2. Load heavy appliances first, tying them securely to the rings along truck walls with rope. Pile smaller and lighter items on top until this section is packed tightly to the roof and tied.
  3. Next, load large furniture-sofas, beds, mattresses and box springs. Pack box springs, mattresses, mirrors, and pictures in packing crates cushioned with newspaper. Stand them on edge along inside of truck.
  4. Place rolled rugs lengthwise in the center of the truck, wedged with the heaviest cartons, such as books and records (don't pack any cartons over 30 lbs. or you won't be able to lift them.
  5. Remove table legs and load table tops face down on pads or blankets.
  6. Fill the truck to the top with boxes, chairs, and lightweight bundles, such as lampshades, or awkwardly shaped items, such as bicycles. Leave as little empty space as possible to prevent the load from shifting en route.

Packing Tips

When it's time to get a move on ... Whether just down the block, or across the country.... Here are a few tips for pain free packing.

Before even thinking about beginning to pack, savvy movers get rid of excess baggage.

Then, establish a "don't pack this stuff" closet to store things you'll need during the trip and immediately after arriving at your new home-such as clothes and cleaning materials-as well as valuables.

When you start packing, follow these tips:

  • Start with objects that aren't used every day-such as out of season clothes or collectibles.
  • Pack the contents of each room in separate boxes and label or mark the outside of each box with it's contents and the room in which it should be placed in the new home.
  • Use small cartons for heavy items such as books and cookware, and keep the weight of each box less than 30 pounds.
  • For larger boxes, put heavier items at the bottom and lighter things on top.
  • On moving day, if using a mover, accompany him as he takes inventory of your furnishings, making sure the condition of your items is correctly recorded.
  • If you are renting a truck and moving yourself, consider getting coverage offered by the truck rental company if your homeowner insurance policy doesn't cover belongings en route to your new home.
  • Fragile items, such as dishes, televisions, computers, artwork, lamps, etc. should get special attention when packing. Use of special boxes and packing materials like bubble wrap will help insure that your delicate items arrive in perfect shape.
  • Feel free to ask a EPS sales associate for advice on packing for your move!!!
